The world of The Crystal Cabinet is Salterns, the eighteenth-century house near Poole Harbour where modernist writer, Mary Butts, spent her childhood. Her great-grandfather was Thomas Butts, the patron and friend of William Blake, and Salterns included amongst its treasures 42 of Blake's pictures, many of which are now in the Tate Gallery. In this memoir, Mary Butts makes Salterns and its setting the central character: the light of memory is intensified by imagination.
