In keeping with Penguin's brief to bring great literature to the masses, the Penguin Modern Painters series was conceived as a way of bringing art to the people at a time when, because of the war, much art had been removed from public, city-based galleries and packed off for safekeeping within rural collections.

Softcover in very good condition with clean, unmarked pages and no marking or creasing to front or back cover. Elegantly sunbleached with some light marking to front cover and browning along spine and outside edges of cover. Original owner's signature in blue ink together with illustrated gift / ex-libris plate on inside front cover.
