The Story of O by Pauline Reage With an Essay by Jean Paulhan (Olympia Press Traveller's Companion Series No 44 / 1965)

The Olympia Press was a French Publishing house established by Maurice Girodias, which specialised in the publication of pornography / erotica (often penned anonymously by writers who subsequently went on to achieve fame. However, in addition to these risqué works, Olympia Press also published numerous cutting-edge works by literary writers whose work was prohibited in their own countries, such as Samuel Beckett, William Burroughs, Vladimir Nabakov, Alexander Trocchi and J. P. Donleavy. It was able to do so by publishing the novels in the English language only, hence the 'Traveller's Companion' label.

Undoubtedly one of the most famous erotic novels ever published. The Story of O was originally published in 1954 under the pseudonym of Pauline Reage, but was four decades later revealed to be the work of French intellectual, Anne Desclos (aka Dominique Aury), who had apparently penned to novel to prove to her husband, Jean Paulhan, that a woman could write like the Maquis de Sade.
