In keeping with Penguin's brief to bring great literature to the masses, the Penguin Modern Painters series was conceived as a way of bringing art to the people at a time when, because of the war, much art had been removed from public, city-based galleries and packed off for safekeeping within rural collections.

Softcover in very good condition with clean, unmarked pages and creasing to front or back cover. Elegantly sun-bleached with some light marking to cover and browning along spine and outside edges of cover. Original owner's signature in blue ink on inside front cover and date of 1944.
